Spacemunna

Recent South African Hip Hop Award winner, Spaceman was born Diau Madisha in Zebediela, a village in Limpopo, South Africa. Through his childhood, Spaceman found hip hop when he moved from Limpopo to Soweto in Johannesburg, South Africa. Now a resident in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, Spaceman has lived out all social classes which most people would rarely experience.

In 2003 Spaceman studied sound engineering and saw his first independent musical success by releasing his debut track, which went on to become track of the week on Y Fm’s Harambe Show. The track, titled “Revolution”, created some controversy within the South African hip-hop culture with lyrics like “there’s no such thing as local hip hop/ jus hip hop.”  In 2004 he released his first mixtape, titled Spaceman: The mixtape’, which was released and distributed independently. The mixtape featured the then upcoming rapperPro-kid. He strategically planned; organised and financed a tour with a few of the artists featured on the mixtape and hit the road to market the mixtape. The tour covered Umthata, East London, PE, Grahamstown, Johannesburg, Durban, Limpopo and Bloemfontein. From community radio stations to malls, no stone was left unturned.

In 2005 he participated in a Metro Fm compilation (the Exodus hosted by T-Bo Touch) and expanded to TV by playing a rapper in a comedy show Kenny Makhenzo on SABC 1. 2006 Rather saw Spaceman’s label rebirth Munna Music and further his studies in marketing and management for the Music Industry at Wits University. Spaceman released his second mixtape in 2007 titled THE EXCLUSIVE 16 BAR MIXTAPE whereby all the tracks were produced by him, and which also features signed and unsigned artists such as Proverb, Reason, Nthabi, Explicit and Morale to name a few.
With all the production experience gained in the past four years, Spaceman has worked alongside some of the big name artists in the music industry such as Slikour, Infa,Omen, Arno Castens, and a few more artists.

The year 2008 saw the release of Spaceman’s third mixtape, titled The Sample Travel Mixtape’, with the debuting single, Love Me Right, which was play listed on Yfm and Metro fm, where he undoubtedly took second place on the top unsigned list on two occasions. SpaceMunna has made several appearances over the years as well. He has been featured in the Hype Magazine. He’s also been play listed on Y FM, 5 FM, Ukohzi FM, Voice of TembisaFM, Voice of Wits, BKO, Gagasi FM and Metro FM. He has composed and recorded jingles for Y-FM. Spacemen has appeared on e.TV’s hip-hop program, Shiz Niz and on Channel O. He has been featured on Slikour’s The Ventilation Mixtape.

He has since gone from Spaceman to SpaceMunna. SpaceMunna just recently released a
documentary called the “Limpopo Mixtape,” in 2013, which is a DVD and CD compilation that features hip hop artists from Limpopo such as Mchangani, Lekkersweet and the likes, talking about their experiences, influences and challenges of being a hip hop artist in Limpopo. He has been featured in Sunday Sun for this. He has also collaborated with Roman Handt on his performance outfit, The Space Suit.

He recently went on the LimpHop Mixtape tour where he along with most of the artists that are featured on the documentary went to various areas in Limpopo such as Seshego and Polokwane to perform their music. It was a great opportunity for both the artist and the LimpHop movement. He was nominated for three awards at the South African Hip Hop awards namely; Best Male, King of Limpopo and Mixtape of the year. He walked away with the King of Limpopo title and award. He is working on his debut album.
